“While in college, I focused on laboratory and leadership experience, but I had not obtained a significant experience in a clinical setting actually working side by side with physicians. My experience at KDDS was far more valuable than any previous volunteering or shadowing experience because I was spending 40 or more hours a week actually seeing and talking to patients and learning from the doctors. I not only learned how to get patient histories, fill-out medical charts and assist with procedures, but also learned how to communicate with pharmacists, the intricacies of insurance and billing, and how to manage a physician’s schedule. This inside look into a medical career strongly affirmed my goals of becoming a physician, and also helped me go into medical school more confident and prepared. Now as a first year medical student, I find that I am more comfortable speaking with patients and obtaining relevant information than some of my peers who missed out on such an in-depth clinical experience. Furthermore, I have made contacts with physicians and other medical students across the country that have helped strengthen my professional network.” -Pooja Patel

At Kuchnir Dermatology, she worked with Dr. Kathleen White, in addition to organizing recruiting from the University of Chicago and a gap year meeting with Dr. Kelly Morrissey.

“I really enjoyed the mentorship aspect of the KDDS Gap Year Program. I got to work closely with and develop a meaningful relationship with a specific physician, Dr. Kathy White, who was eager to teach me things and answer my questions, interested in my life, and wanted to help me succeed. Then as the year progressed and a new class of students joined the program, I got to pass on what I had learned and also assume the role of mentor myself. The KDDS Gap Year Program really embodies the “see one, do one, teach one” approach which was a great introduction to something that is so crucial to the medical field.” -Natalia Jovanovic

“Taking a year off before medical school to work with doctors in a clinical setting was one of the best decisions in my life. Not only did I learn a lot about dermatology, but I also learned how to take histories, do oral case presentations, and provide professional and compassionate care to patients. The best part of the job was being able to interact with and help numerous patients on a daily basis. Being in my second year of medical school, I can attest that the skills I learned as a clinical assistant have helped me excel in the doctoring curriculum at SIU. Any premedical student who is taking a gap year should seriously consider this opportunity.”
